Cantwell from Mullinahone

Posted By: Brendan Quirk
Date: 7/4/07

I would love someone to be able to help me.

John Cantwell married Mary Walsh. Their son, Thomas, was baptised in St Michael's Parish, Mullinahone, Co. Tipperary on 29.3.1827. Thomas' godparents were Michael Brien & Bridget Cantwell.

About 1859 Thomas married Ellen McGrath, who was baptised in Mullinahone on 8.3.1836, the daughter of William McGrath & Mary Meehan. Ellen's godparents were Alexander Burrows & Ellen McGrath.

They had two children: Ellen Cantwell, baptised 28.5.1862 & William Cantwell, baptised 29.1.1865. Thomas died, date unknown.

On 7.8.1869, Ellen Cantwell (Widow) married Martin Quirke in Mullinahone. They had a daughter, Bridget Quirke, baptised in Mullinahone on 17.9.1870. Ellen & Martin Quirke emigrated to Australia in 1871 along with young William Cantwell. I presume young Ellen and Bridget came too but I can find no further trace of either of them.

William (born Cantwell) was known as Quirk in Australia & I'm descended from him. Ellen & Martin had more children: Annie born 1871 & died 1936, Patrick Christopher born 1873 married Kathleen Treacy & died 1915, Elizabeth born 1876 & Catherine born 1878 & died 1938.

Ellen Quirk (formerly Cantwell, born McGrath) died 8.10.1898 in Brunswick, Victoria, Australia and Martin Quirk died 27.3.1916 in St Kilda, Victoria, Australia.

I would love to know more about the related Cantwell, Walsh, McGrath, Meehan & Quirk lines from Mullinahone. I would think there must have been brothers and sisters. I would really like to know what happened to young Ellen Cantwell, perhaps she came to Australia like her brother and became a Quirk or she might have stayed in Ireland. Likewise Bridget Quirk(e) - perhaps either or both died. I would also like to know what became of Elizabeth Quirk.

Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks
