I am a direct descendant of William Cherry, through Arthur James Cherry, and have a lot of information on his whole family. But unfortunately I know little about William Cherry's ancestors as I have not made a trip to Northampton Records Office to look at the parish records just yet.
I shall just tell you what I know about them (off the top of my head). William Cherry married Mary Julia Ogaria Smith in South Africa, while he was serving there as part of the Royal Artillery (I have all his army papers, by the way). Their eldest son was born there in 1844 at the Cape of Good Hope, his name was William Thomas. They then returned to Grendon and had Georgina Isabella in 1847. Then came John Ralph S (who erected a grand grave stone for his mother in Grendon churchyard- I have photos of this) in 1850. He was either born in Grendon or the Cape, but I am unsure as there is conflicting evidence from the censuses, some say he was born in South Africa, others say Grendon but it was probably South Africa. Then came Arthur James in 1852 (I have his birth certificate), he was born in Grendon. Afterwards there was: Julia (or Lillian) in Grendon in 1856, I think she died sometime between 1861 and 1871. Then there was Ada/Adelaide who was born in Grendon in about 1861. Then there was Andrew A who was born in about 1864 in Grendon, followed by Francis L in about 1866 and Septimus Gavin in about 1869.
I do have further details about all of the children when they were adults in my notes, but cannot remember their details off the top of my head.
I hope this is a help and please email to find out more.
Jo.
