I've been doing extensive research on my great, great grandfather THOMAS LOY of Harrison, Harrison County, Iowa (1880 federal census). I believe he was born in Armagh, Ireland (Ulster) before immigrating to the US. According to the flax seed grower's list of 1798 provided by Ancestor.com there are three (3) LOY'S listed (Daniel & Patrick of Armagh and Owen of Tyrone county in Ulster). Since these are two of the original six counties of Ulster during the plantation period of Ulster involving the Scots and English, I wonder if the LOY'S mentioned were part of the Scots transplanted there. However, when checking the date bases thru Scotland (probate and civil parish records) I find zero (0) LOYS. When checking records thru England there are listed 133 probate and civil parish records thru county YORKSHIRE dated as far back as the early 1600's. Could it be that the bulk of the LOY'S from Ireland originated from YORKSHIRE, England before the migration to the US. Just a thought based on the available data that I've been researching. Any and all info or comments would be greatly appreciated...Thanks
